About 12 miles off the coast of Gargano are the Tremiti Islands, also known as Diomede islands, which are defined by their charming and unspoilt beauty "Pearls of the Adriatic".
The small archipelago consists of the islands of San Nicola, San Domino, Cretaccio, Caprara, and approximately 11 miles from these, the island of Pianosa. The crystal clear waters of the Tremiti attracts each year thousands of tourists.
St. Nicholas is the historical, religious and administrative center of the archipelago.
For many traces of an ancient and glorious past, it is considered an open air museum.
San Domino is largely covered by forests of Aleppo pine, for the fertility and spontaneity of flowers of every color, was called by the Benedictine Monks' "Garden of Paradise".
The waters are clear, the coast is irregular with coves, headlands and cliffs, the cliff of the Elephant, from the form it takes and Pagliai, pyramid-shaped monoliths resembling real haystacks, are wonderful.
Going around the archipelago by boat, you can visit, among other things, the Cave of the Violets, Bue Marino and the cave of the Swallows.
In San Domino you will find the beaches of Cala delle Arene, Cala Matano and the beach below Pagliai, the last one can be reached only by sea.
Cretaccio is a yellow rock mass and for its argillaceous nature is dissapearing from the constant corrosion of the atmospheric and marine agents.
Caprara (or Capraia or Capperaia), uninhabited but it is interesting as the others, at the tip of the lighthouse has a great Architiello of natural architecture.
22 Km away lies the island of Pianosa, partially invaded by water. The island has no vegetation and is uninhabited.
With the establishment of the Tremiti Islands Marine Reserve, in order to protect vegetation and wildlife species, Pianosa is an integral part of the marine reserve.
This involves, within 500 meters from the island, the ban on landing and navigation, the absolute prohibition of fishing and the ban on diving, unless accompanied by authorized diving guides.
